Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman Applauds President Obama's Historic Signing of Health Insurance Reform
Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman today released the statement below following President Obama's historic signing of comprehensive health insurance reform.
"Today is a historic day. For nearly a century, Presidents have worked to pass health reform, and today, it finally became a reality. This is a historic victory, not just for President Obama, but for every Floridian."
"Floridians will finally have control over their own health care. These reforms will lower costs for American families and small businesses, rein in insurance companies and put an end to their worst practices, while reducing the deficit by more than a trillion dollars in the next twenty years.
"Beginning this year, Floridians will start to see the benefits of this reform. Immediately, Florida's families will be able to keep their children on their health care plan until their 26th birthday; small businesses will receive tax breaks for extending coverage to their employees; seniors will receive a $250 rebate for prescription drugs that fall in the Medicare donut hole and will no longer have to make the choice between buying the prescription drugs they need or putting food on the table.
"But these historic reforms came despite the best efforts of Florida's Republican politicians to block reform. Since President Obama took office, Republicans have been perusing a strategy to block, kill, or delay every piece of legislation President Obama and the Democrats have put forward - no matter the stakes. For the last year, Republicans have played politics with our health - standing with insurance companies instead of middle class Floridians.
"Today, I join the people of the Sunshine State who have struggled with our broken health care system, in thanking President Obama and all Florida Democrats for their strong leadership and commitment to fighting for the middle class. This historic day is an important turning point for the country and for the millions of families and business that will see their health care costs go down as their access to quality care grows."
