Politico: Fla. Democrats slam Scott for not signing governors' letter urging CHIP funding approval

  • Florida Democrats slammed Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday for not signing a bi-partisan letter urging Congress to re-authorize funding for the low-income health insurance program for kids. 
  • "It should surprise no one that Florida's self-serving governor didn't sign a letter that would urge Congress to bring back a program that has helped hundreds of thousands of sick children in Florida."
  • More than 341,000 Florida kids are enrolled in the program with almost 200,000 of them being subsidized by the state. The state had $359 million in financial padding from last year, but next month will run out of money for the program.
  • U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, (D-Fla.) has co-sponsored legislation — the KIDS Act of 2017 — to grant more funding for an additional five years.
