Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

Today, Florida Democratic Party Chair Allison Tant issued the following statement honoring the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act:

“As we celebrate the historic achievements of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the legislation’s profound impact on our democracy, we know that principles and accomplishments of the VRA remain under constant attack 50 years later. In Florida, we unfortunately know all to well just how devastating Republican attempts to suppress, purge, and disenfranchise voters can be — especially in African American and Hispanic communities.

“In Florida, and across many Southern states, the fight for the Voting Rights Act continues each and every day. Democrats remain committed to the simple truth that we should make it easier to vote, not harder. It is beyond shameful that Florida Republicans cannot join us in this effort.”
