Statement from Florida Democratic Party on DOJ Approval of Portions of New Voting Law

Tallahassee, FL – Today, the Florida Democratic Party issued a statement on the announcement that the Department of Justice has approved portions of House Bill 1355, the new Voter Elections Bill, excluding the most controversial portions which remain under review of the courts.

Statement from Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith:

“Today’s announcement does not put to rest the fact that the four major provisions of this bill violate the voting rights of Floridians. By announcing the DOJ ruling without news of the remaining four provisions, the Governor and Secretary of State are attempting to pull the wool over the eyes of Florida voters. This bill, and the provisions in question, are nothing more than a partisan power grab aimed at hindering the voting rights of Floridians.

“In the midst of an economic recovery, with nearly one million Floridians out of work, this governor has chosen to restrict Floridians right to cast a ballot instead of keeping his promise to create jobs.”
