Statement from FLA Dems on Speaker Cannon’s Announcement that the House will Appeal Amendment 6 Ruling

Tallahassee, FL – The Florida Democratic Party today issued the following statement in response to Speaker of the House Dean Cannon’s announcement the state House will appeal a federal judges ruling upholding amendment 6.
 
Statement from Florida Democratic Chairman Rod Smith:
 
“Today’s announcement by Speaker Dean Cannon that the House will file an appeal to the amendment 6 ruling is nothing more than politics at its worst. The legislative power of any state comes from the people – and the people have spoken loudly on the subject of Fair Districts. It’s time for Republicans like Speaker Cannon to stop the obstructionism, stop the political shenanigans and implement the people’s will.
 
“Furthermore, Speaker Cannon has criticized Fair Districts for not participating in the Republican redistricting road show, claiming they would prefer to have the maps drawn by the courts. That claim doesn’t hold water given the Speaker and his Republican colleagues would prefer to see Fair Districts killed by the court without giving people the opportunity to helpdraw maps. His claim is the ultimate height of hypocrisy.”
