Statement on CD-18 Primary Election

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Following the results of tonight’s primary election in which Patrick Murphy was elected as the Democratic nominee in Congressional District 18, the Florida Democratic Party released the following statements:

STATEMENT FROM FDP CHAIR ROD SMITH:

“I’d like to congratulate Patrick Murphy on his victory tonight — Florida Democrats are looking forward to doing all we can to win this race and elect him to Congress. Patrick will be a champion for middle class families who will stand up to the Tea Party extremists like Allen West who are trying to end Medicare as we know it. With Patrick Murphy as our candidate, this is a seat Democrats can and will win in November.”

STATEMENT FROM FDP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SCOTT ARCENEAUX:

“Allen West has shown time and again that he’s out of touch with the people of Congressional District 18 and that he’s part of the problem in Washington. When he’s not spewing hateful Tea Party rhetoric, he’s voting in lockstep with Paul Ryan to end Medicare as we know it while giving tax breaks to billionaires and millionaires — prioritizing an extreme agenda that does nothing to help businesses create jobs or grow our economy. Florida voters are tired of these broken politics from Republicans like West, and Democrats are committed to running an aggressive campaign to elect Patrick Murphy.”
