Statement on Romney-Ryan Platform Inclusion of "Akin" Plank

Tallahassee, FL — Following yesterday’s vote by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan’s Republican Party Platform Committee to include restrictive and extreme language outlawing abortion, even in cases of incest or rape, the Florida Democratic Party issued the following statement:

STATEMENT FROM BRANNON JORDAN, SPOKESWOMAN FOR THE FLORIDA DEMOCRATIC PARTY:

“Republicans, led by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, have shown yet again that they are not on the side of Florida’s women, and that they are more interested in prioritizing an extreme Tea Party agenda than improving our economy or helping businesses create jobs. It’s not surprising that the Romney-Ryan platform includes these backward looking policies: Ryan alone has co-sponsored 38 anti-abortion measures, and was a co-sponsor of Congressman Akin’s controversial forcible rape legislation. But the formal adoption of this dangerous policy is a new low for the GOP, and Romney and Ryan continue to prove — through their statements, actions, and the official platform of the party they lead — that they are not looking out for our mothers, sisters and daughters.”
