ICYMI: Gov. Scott mugs for cameras while legislative priorities languish

Key Point: As another day passes, and nearly a million Floridians remain unable to access affordable health insurance, Governor Rick Scott is spending his time doing photo opportunities instead of rolling up his sleeves and getting to work for the people of Florida. The Governor claimed ahead of session that expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act to nearly one million Floridians was a priority. Now with less than two weeks left in the legislative session, having sat silently by for weeks as the GOP played petty politics with Medicaid expansion, Governor Scott’s failed leadership has never been clearer.

Just yesterday, Republican Senator John Thrasher said “there is no fallout” to letting nearly a million Floridians go without affordable healthcare. Expanding healthcare to nearly a million Floridians is more than a callous political calculation of how much political “fallout” there will be. The consequences could not be more dire for those whose access to healthcare is put in jeopardy by legislative inaction. It is well past time for Governor Scott to grow a backbone and lead his party on this central issue.
