Florida Republicans on Marriage Equality: No Comment

After offering nothing but silence in the wake of the Supreme Court’s rulings on DOMA and Prop 8, the Republican Party of Florida today still refuses to comment on whether or not all Floridians deserve equality under the law.

In fact, if you only listened to Lenny Curry and the Republican Party of Florida for the past few weeks you would have no idea that a landmark civil rights victory had recently been won for millions of Americans. Has Lenny Curry forgotten where the Republican Party of Florida stands on a key civil rights issue of our time?

Just five years ago the Republican Party of Florida spent over a quarter of a million dollars in support of discrimination against LGBT Floridians and now they will not even so much a comment. Has the Republican Party of Florida realized they are on the losing side of history?

Background:

Advocates: Florida will have gay marriages someday. “State Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry didn’t respond to a question about whether the party would help fund the opposition. In the 2008 campaign that led to Florida’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, the party gave $300,000 early on.” [Tampa Tribune, 7/6/13]
