Corcoran Uses Gun Safety Debate to Cynically Advance His Gubernatorial Primary Ambitions

House Speaker Chooses Breitbart and Fox News over Parkland Students, #NeverAgain Movement

Tallahassee, Fl. — House Speaker Richard Corcoran is ignoring the demands of the #NeverAgain movement and Parkland students in favor of a national media blitz designed to bolster his name recognition with the Republican base and advance his political ambitions. Over the past two days, Corcoran has rejected efforts to ban assault weapons and instead opted to conduct interviews with far right media outlets, attack fellow Republicans, and even brag about his efforts “to end gun-free zones.”

Most egregiously, as Parkland families were still in the State Capitol, Corcoran’s Watchdog PAC sent an email bragging about his “game-changing” legislation to put more guns in schools.

“Richard Corcoran is exploiting the tragedy of Parkland to advance his own political ambitions and try to boost his name recognition with the Republican base,” said FDP spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “Instead of working to end gun violence, Corcoran is pandering to far right outlets like Breitbart and Fox News. In the face of another senseless gun tragedy, Floridians deserve real leadership — not Richard Corcoran’s shameless self-promotion and political games.”

Over the course of interviews with outlets like Breitbart and Fox News, Corcoran has said little about what he will do to prevent gun violence, and instead chosen to engage in blatantly partisan attacks designed to advance his yet-to-be announced gubernatorial campaign. In an interview with Breitbart, Corcoran tried to blame the Parkland shooting on the Obama administration. And this morning on Laura Ingraham’s radio show, he even bragged about receiving an A rating from the NRA.
