Statement on Stand Your Ground Law Being Used in Clearwater Case

After it was revealed that Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri won’t charge a man in the shooting of a man over a parking spot because it “falls under the Stand Your Ground law”, Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo released renewed calls to end Stand Your Ground:

“By continually allowing the NRA to write Florida’s gun laws, Republicans have allowed cruel acts of violence, like the shooting death of Markeis McGlockton. The expansion of Stand Your Ground in 2017 was executed by the Republican legislature, overseen by Rick Scott, and approved by the NRA.

“The expansion shifted the burden of proof and has allowed even more racial profiling and bias. It’s past time this law is overturned so justice can be carried out in the case of Markeis McGlockton, and we can prevent future senseless gun violence.”
