Marco Rubio and Senate Republicans’ Latest Plan: A Nationwide Abortion Ban

As Marco Rubio doubles down on his support for overturning Roe v. Wade, NBC News revealed today that Senate Republicans are considering a push for a federal ban on abortion if they take control of the chamber. 

“For years, Marco Rubio has supported total bans on abortion and called for overturning Roe v. Wade. Now that both are on the table, he and his fellow Republicans are pushing a dangerous agenda to completely strip away Floridians’ freedom to control their own bodies and make their own health care decisions,” said Florida Democratic Party spokesperson Grant Fox. 

Marco Rubio has a long history of pushing to overturn Roe v. Wade and supporting abortion bans without exceptions for rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother: 

• During his first campaign for Senate, he said Roe v. Wade was a “catastrophe” with “horrifying” results, and vowed to support justices for the Supreme Court who would overturn it. 

• Rubio told an interviewer he “personally” doesn’t believe in putting exceptions into abortion bans, even for rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother

• When he was asked in 2015 whether Roe should be overturned, Rubio said yes 

• Just recently he backed Texas’ abortion ban, saying it could help lead to overturning Roe v. Wade
