Marco Rubio Breaks His Promises On Gun Safety
In the aftermath of the tragic mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Marco Rubio promised Floridians that he would support commonsense legislation to stop gun violence. But in the years since, he’s failed to keep his word, opposing the same measures he once supported and choosing to side with the gun industry over his constituents.
“Marco Rubio told Floridians that he would support commonsense measures to keep them safe from gun violence. But time and again, he’s chosen the gun lobby over keeping his promises in the wake of tragic mass shootings. Rubio doesn’t have the courage to stand up to the special interests and his party leaders, and Floridians are paying the price,” said Florida Democratic Party spokesperson Grant Fox.
As Congressional leaders propose new gun safety measures following a string of recent mass shootings, Rubio is breaking the promises he made to Floridians:
- After Parkland, Marco Rubio told Floridians he would support legislation to ban bump stocks. But just last week, he attacked proposals to ban bump stocks as a measure that has “nothing to do with how we solve the problem.”
- Rubio said he was open to expanding background checks in 2018. But in a recent interview with CNN, he opposed the idea, saying it wouldn’t stop mass shootings.
- Rubio pledged to support legislation to raise the age limit to purchase a rifle, saying, “I absolutely believe that in this country if you are 18 years of age, you should not be able to buy a rifle, and I will support a law that takes that right away.” But just this week, he wouldn’t commit to it.
