FLORIDA DEMOCRATIC PARTY RESPONDS TO FLORIDA SUPREME COURT HEARING OF ORAL ARGUMENTS ON ABORTION

On Wednesday, the Florida Supreme Court held oral arguments on Amendment 4 — the ballot initiative enshrining a right to reproductive freedom in the Florida Constitution. In response, the Florida Democratic Party issued the following statement:

“Today, our democracy was tested,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “The oral arguments presented today made clear that the question before us is best answered by Florida voters.

“Floridians deserve the opportunity to vote on this issue. As with every other state in the nation with abortion on the ballot, voters understand what is at stake in November. It’s a choice between an extreme, near-total abortion ban or the right to keep the government out of personal medical decisions.

As we await the ruling, we won’t stop fighting to restore reproductive rights. We are hopeful the Florida Supreme Court moves quickly to rule on the amendment and remain committed to organizing year-round to restore reproductive healthcare for millions of women – not just across the state but the entire South. ”
