BREAKING: Rick Scott Votes Against Protecting Access to IVF Treatment
Today, Rick Scott voted against the Right to IVF Act — bipartisan legislation to establish federal protections for IVF treatment. The Florida Democratic Party issued the following statement in response:
“Rick Scott voted against protecting access to IVF — a miracle treatment that has allowed millions of Americans to start families. Scott has made it crystal clear that he will stop at nothing to rip away personal decisions from women and their families — and it will cost him his Senate seat, said Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried.
Scott previously blocked legislation to protect IVF treatment that was introduced in response to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that stored embryos have the same legal protections as children. Scott is now trying to cover up his anti-IVF record by touting an “empty, symbolic” resolution that would do nothing to actually protect IVF and spending millions to lie to Floridians about his phony support for IVF.
Here’s what to know about Scott’s “100% pro-life” record:
- Scott supports Florida’s’ six-week abortion ban: “I am 100% pro-life and if I was still governor, I would sign this bill.”
- In April, Scott doubled down on his support for the ban, saying “If I was the sitting governor, and the six-week abortion ban came in front of me, I would sign it. I’ve always said I would sign it.“
- On the day Florida’s ban took effect, Scott said he would sign “any” anti-abortion legislation.
- Scott pledged to vote against Amendment 4–keeping Florida’s abortion ban in place.
- Scott co-sponsored a national abortion ban that would put doctors in prison.
- Scott believes “life begins at conception.”
- Scott celebrated the Supreme Court’s Decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which he has pushed for since 2010.
- Scott voted against bipartisan legislation to protect access to contraception.
- Since Roe’s downfall, Scott has set his sights on restricting access to safe and effective medication abortion.
- Scott received an A+ rating from an extreme anti-choice group which opposes IVF and contraception and wants to ban abortion at conception.
