Florida Democrats Slam Trump FEMA Head for Hurricane Season Gaffe

Tallahassee, FL This week, Reuters reported that David Richardson, acting head of FEMA, told FEMA staff that he was “unaware” that the United States had a hurricane season. Subsequent reporting also revealed that there will be no changes to FEMAs annual hurricane response plans. In response, the Florida Democratic Party has issued the following statement:

“Disaster response used to be a bipartisan issue — and then Trump came along,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “He fired a highly-qualified FEMA head for daring to argue that FEMA should exist and replaced him with an unqualified crony who either doesn’t know what hurricane season is or thinks that the devastation Florida experiences on a near-yearly basis is a joke. Hurricanes aren’t a damn joke.

“FEMA staff have admitted that they’re not ready for hurricane season. Trump’s budget cuts and staff changes have gutted the ability to respond to Florida’s most frequent and predictable natural disasters — and all this ahead of a hurricane season forecasted to be more active than usual. Floridians of all parties should be up in arms over this complete failure of leadership.”
