TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried issued the following statement after Attorney General James Uthmeier was held in contempt of court by a federal judge for continuing to enforce a law that was deemed unconstitutional.
“Florida’s unelected Attorney General just got held in contempt of court and he’s bragging about it online. That’s not leadership. That’s lawlessness. This is a rare instance of a state attorney general being held in contempt of court, highlighting the seriousness of undermining the court’s authority.
This law was dangerous, discriminatory, and blocked for a reason. Uthmeier’s contempt for the court mirrors his contempt for the Constitution—and for basic human decency.
Florida deserves an Attorney General who upholds the law and fights for the people of Florida, not his own personal agenda.”
