BREAKING NEWS: Rick Scott and Donald Trump Administration Don't Deliver On Promise To Remove Florida From Plans To Drill for Oil Off the Coast of Florida
Today, in a Congressional hearing attended by Florida Democrat Darren Soto, Walter Cruickshank, acting director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), said Florida is not off the table for offshore drilling activities, paving the way for offshore drilling in Florida. From the Washington Examiner:
“Ongoing analysis: Walter Cruickshank, acting director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, said at the hearing that Zinke has spoken with eight governors who have expressed their concerns about potential drilling off their coasts, and that Interior plans to undertake a rigorous public review process before finalizing its plans “We are following the process conducting a full analysis of all areas included in the draft proposed program,” Cruickshank said. He added that Zinke’s commitment to withdraw Florida from offshore drilling is not a “formal action” and the state remains subject to the government’s official analysis.”
In response, Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo issued the following statement:
“These developments are more proof that Rick Scott and his close ally Donald Trump will say and do anything to further Scott’ political ambitions, while Floridians pay the price. Scott’s long record of backing drilling off our shores and beaches is well documented, and it’s clear his most recent words were nothing more than a dishonest and self-serving political stunt. Once again, Floridians are seeing they can’t trust Scott to look out for anyone but himself.”
Today’s developments come one week after Politifact gave the Scott a full flop on oil drilling in Florida -- in response to his long record of backing drilling off Florida’s shores and beaches in the Sunshine State.
