Florida Democrats Urge U.S. Justice Department To Block Elections Law That Hurts Minority Voting Rights

Today, Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith urged the U.S Attorney General to reject the GOP ‘Voter Suppression’ Law, submitting to the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division the Party’s response to Sec. of State Kurt Browning’s application for preclearance for House Bill 1355.

“The Republican Voter Suppression Law is nothing but a partisan power grab designed to disenfranchise Floridians and make it harder to vote in the Sunshine State. The Department of State has failed to show that the changes in the law wouldn’t harm minority voting rights and they have failed to properly request preclearance for the Emergency Rules they created as they have implemented this law. Because this law would do real harm to minority voting rights, indeed the rights of all Floridians, the Florida Democratic Party will do everything in our power to ensure this law is thrown out,” said Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith.
