When Push Comes To Shove, Tallahassee Republicans Are Quick to Abandon Florida’s Dreamers

Tallahassee, FL — While Rick Scott and Republicans in Tallahassee continue their insulting election-year pandering to the Hispanic community, Senate Republican leader Lizbeth Benacquisto’s opposition to in-state tuition for Dreamers in her bitter GOP primary shows exactly where the heart of the GOP really is.

“Lizbeth Benacquisto’s willingness to shun the Hispanic community makes it clear: the GOP’s newfound support of in-state tuition for Dreamers is nothing more than political posturing that won’t survive contact with the Republican base,” said Florida Democratic Party Political Director Christian Ulvert. “Benacquisto is simply showing the Republican Party’s true colors.”

“While Republicans may think their pandering will play well in November, Benacquisto’s rejection of this commonsense proposal shows that the GOP will abandon Florida’s Dreamers whenever they need appeal to Republican primary voters. Unfortunately for Scott and Florida GOP, Florida’s Hispanic community won’t forget Rick Scott’s record of putting the needs of his Tea Party base ahead of what’s best for the Hispanic community,” Ulvert added.
