At Columbia/HCA or Rick Scott’s Campaign, This Is What a Cover-Up Looks Like

This is what a cover-up looks like. Deny, deny, deny. Distract the public with a blatantly false TV ad. Rick Scott’s campaign manager claims she can’t even remember if a van full of her campaign staffers made racist jokes in “over-the-top Mexican accents.”

“I don’t believe they even happened…There is no validity that we can find to any of those comments.”

– Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, March 24, 2014

“If something was said in an accent, no one remembers what it was.”

– Campaign Manager Melissa Sellers, March 21, 2014

“Upon advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer the questions by asserting my rights and privileges under the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”

– Rick Scott, July 27, 2000

Florida Democratic Party spokesman Joshua Karp said, “This is what a cover-up looks like. The truth is clear: A van full of Rick Scott’s campaign staffers made racist jokes about Hispanics. But Rick Scott is so desperate to win reelection, he and his team won’t take an ounce of responsibility. They’ll just try to sweep it under the rug.

“Rick Scott’s policies have disrespected Florida’s Hispanics for three years. Now it’s clear that’s not just Rick Scott’s idea of good public policy — his blatant disrespect for Hispanics is clearly his idea of good campaign politics.”
