Statement from Vice Chair, Rev. Dr. Karen R. Green on Breast Cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Florida Democratic Party Vice Chair, Rev. Karen R. Green issued the following statement to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This comes at a time when hundreds of thousands of women in Florida have no access to affordable health care. Studies show that one in five women in Florida do not have any form of health insurance. There are more than 2 million Floridians who are uninsured while the DeSantis Administration has steadfastly refused to expand Medicaid.
“As a cancer survivor, I am well aware of how devastating it can be to hear the words ‘you have cancer.’ It can, and is for the most part, a life changing experience. It makes you question many things that you take for granted and spark doubts as to how long one may have to live. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month we must remember all of those women who do not have access to affordable healthcare.
“Cancer does not have to mean a death sentence. Early detection is key to surviving this illness. However, early detection can only be done if access to affordable healthcare is available. Gov. DeSantis should rethink his stance on Medicaid and expand it for women who deserve a chance at surviving this illness just like wealthier, insured women do.”
