Florida Democrats Slam Rick Scott on Social Security and Medicare Plan Anniversary

FDP Chair Nikki Fried says Scott’s plan was a ‘bad idea two years ago and even worse today’

Two years ago today, Rick Scott released his plan to sunset Social Security and Medicare. In response, the Florida Democratic Party has issued the following statement:

“Even Republicans think Rick Scott’s plan to slash Social Security and Medicare is a bad idea,” FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “For two years, Rick Scott has repeatedly called to eliminate these programs and cut benefits that Floridians have spent their entire lives working to secure.

“This costly plan would steal earnings from Floridians. While his wealth has multiplied while serving in the U.S. Senate, Rick Scott has continued to double down on his plan to take away benefits Floridians rely on — it’s rich coming from a millionaire.

“Today, protecting Social Security and Medicare is one of the most critical kitchen table issues for Floridians. It’s a lifeline for nearly five million seniors in Florida, and with rising housing costs and record high inflation, benefits are not keeping up with the cost of living in our state.

“Rick Scott’s tone deaf plan to end Social Security and Medicare was a bad idea two years ago and it’s even worse today. It proves he is an out-of-touch politician who has spent too much time in Washington and is ignorant to the realities Floridians are facing. It’s time to elect a Democrat to the U.S. Senate and re-elect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Floridians deserve a secure retirement and access to the benefits they depend on to survive.
