Statement on Florida’s Extreme Abortion Ban, Officially Takes Effect Today

FDP Chair Nikki Fried says women in Florida face ‘impossible checklist’, ban could be a ‘death sentence’

Today, Florida’s extreme six-week abortion ban officially takes effect. In response, the Florida Democratic Party issued the following statement:

“In 2024, we are in the fight for women’s lives,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “Florida’s extreme six-week abortion ban is officially in effect with no real exceptions, rolling back women’s rights by 50 years.”

“This is Donald Trump’s ban. He cleared the way for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade in a ruling that was leaked nearly two years ago to this day, creating a nationwide health care crisis that has already put women’s lives at risk and taken away fundamental rights from millions of women in Florida and across the country.

“Starting today, women will be turned away from hospital rooms with nowhere to go to get the emergency care they need or could end up in court to seek permission for the medical attention. Pregnancy in Florida for women who have a miscarriage, complications or abnormalities could be a death sentence.

“The ban signed into law by Ron DeSantis goes into effect alongside Florida’s 24 hour waiting period, a law instituted by Rick Scott and a requirement to have two doctors appointments before receiving care. It’s an impossible checklist and they won’t stop there — because it’s not just access to abortion on the line, it’s medication abortion, contraception and IVF, and the risk of a nationwide ban if given the chance.

“Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, voters across the country have made it overwhelmingly clear that they want politicians to stay out of this decision. With abortion on the ballot in November, Florida voters can reverse this extreme ban and restore reproductive freedom by voting yes on Amendment 4 and re-electing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.”
